FRANCES SCHUMANN HOWELL (1905-1994)

Born in Boulder, Colorado, Youldon Howell settled in Pasadena with his family in 1909 and began painting watercolors, his preferred medium, in the 1920s. After graduating from UCLA, he earned a master's degree from Columbia University in 1930. That year he married Frances Schumann, also a talented artist, and began teaching in the Pasadena schools, continuing to paint landscapes, seascapes and still lifes until his death.

FRANCES SCHUMANN HOWELL

Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Frances Schumann was educated at Ohio Wesleyan University, UCLA and Columbia University (M.A.). In 1930 she married artist and educator Youldon Howell and began a long teaching career in the Pasadena public schools (John Muir Jr. College and Pasadena City College). She exhibited widely during her lifetime, often with her husband.
