ELLIOT BOUTON TORREY (1867-1949)

A relative of the botanist Dr. John Torrey, discoverer of the Torrey Pine tree, Elliot Torrey was born in East Hardwick, Vermont, and received an M.A. degree from Bowdoin College in 1890. After studying in France and Italy he had a studio in Boston for a few years and later spent a few years in Paris. He worked in New York from 1911 until his move to San Diego in 1923. Torrey inherited the title "Dean of San Diego Painters" after the death of Charles Reiffel in 1942.
